Abstract
Hans-Jörg Kellner had placed the end of the production of subaerate, that is plated, antoniniani in the reign of Philip the Arab, since no later pieces were known to him. The paper presents two coins in private hands found in 1975 in the area of Carnuntum: a plated antoninianus of Trebonianus Gallus and one of Gallienus of 254/255. Style and striking suggest official manufacture in a Roman mint rather than private forgery. Only when the silver content of billon antoniniani fell from about 30 to under 4 per cent did plating cease to pay.
