Abstract

Test cuts are common on Greek and eastern Celtic coins, rare in the central Celtic area and, apart from the coins of the Parisii, almost unknown in Gaul. In order to approach the question from the technical side first, the paper assembles all known Parisii pieces bearing cuts in a catalogue giving location, weight, find spot and whether the cut lies on obverse or reverse. On this basis the author develops an interpretation that treats the cut not as a test of the metal but as evidence for Celtic religion.
