Collecting coins: getting started
Collecting coins is a hobby with a long tradition and a low barrier to entry. Those who start with a little knowledge enjoy it for longer. Here is an overview of the most important basics.
Choosing a collecting area
At the start comes the question of what to focus on. Popular areas are ancient numismatics with Greek and Roman coins, the Middle Ages, the German states and cities, or modern circulation coins. A category of their own alongside coins are Medals. Those who prefer to collect by motif choose a pictorial theme such as ruler portraits, animals or buildings. A clear focus makes collecting more manageable and more instructive than accumulating at random.
Pay attention to condition
In numismatics, condition often counts for more than quantity. Grade is described in steps from 'fine' to 'mint state'. A well-preserved piece is usually more valuable and more beautiful than several worn ones. The common technical terms are explained in our Glossary of Numismatics.
Check authenticity and origin
Forgeries exist in every price range. What matters are reputable dealers, auction houses or fellow members, and a traceable origin, the provenance. When in doubt, the judgement of experienced collectors helps.
Storing coins properly
Coins should be kept dry and handled as little as possible, ideally in suitable albums, capsules or trays. Old coins should not be cleaned: a grown patina protects the metal and is part of the value. Once removed, it does not come back.
What does it cost to start?
Collecting does not have to be expensive. Even on a small budget you can find interesting pieces, such as circulation coins in good condition or common ancient bronzes. More important than the price is the joy in the individual piece and its history.
Share knowledge and keep learning
You learn fastest in exchange with others. For this, the Bavarian Numismatic Society offers Lectures, contact with experienced collectors, and specialist literature. An overview of the field is given by Numismatics in Munich, and help with classifying the pieces you collect is provided by Identifying coins.
