Abstract

The gold octadrachms struck under Ptolemy IV but referring to Ptolemy III Euergetes show the king in a costume combining the aegis of Zeus, the radiate crown of Helios and the trident of Poseidon. Helmut Kyrieleis read this as a symbolic union of several aspects of the ruler's divinity. The paper starts from a small detail, the middle prong of the trident sceptre formed as a bud or blossom, and asks whether a more precise reading follows from it, namely an identification of the king with Sarapis.
