Abstract

When Karl Philipp von Greiffenklau took over the government of the prince-bishopric of Würzburg in 1749, the imperial currency was in deep crisis: a fluctuating gold to silver ratio, a rising silver price and masses of inferior foreign coin made striking good money a losing business. Individual imperial estates therefore debased the smaller denominations and used the larger sorts, still struck to the imperial standard, as a source of metal. Because striking was al marco, culling and clipping flourished as well. Against this background the third instalment of these studies on Würzburg describes the introduction of the Convention standard.
