Abstract
Studies of the plating of ancient coins had so far dealt mainly with silvered pieces and not at all with gold plating. With the help of the Munich State Coin Collection and the Prehistoric State Collection, the surfaces of five coins could be examined on which a gold-coloured layer was visible beside the corroded areas of the core: a stater of Alexander the Great, two Treveran staters, a Vindelician stater from the Manching excavation of 1965 and a heavily corroded stater apparently of the north Bohemian subsidiary series. Measurement was by X-ray fluorescence; gold, silver, mercury, copper, tin, manganese, zinc and lead were all readily detected.
