Abstract

The coins hitherto taken for the earliest gold coinage of southern England follow in many respects the Gallo-Belgic staters of the Atrebates, whose distribution lies mainly in north-eastern France and which occur in England only in small numbers. Their pictorial ideas, a stylised laureate head of Apollo and a horse to the right, recur in modified form on the first series that may be called British. Derek Allen had arranged the first four British gold series by their spread from the south-east towards the south-west, drawing not only on stylistic criteria but also on progressive weight loss and declining fineness. The paper presents a further, new series.
