Abstract
No Celtic coinage on German soil is as well known as the gold rainbow cups of southern Germany, with a curled animal, a bird's head or a wreath on the obverse and a torque with pellets on the reverse. The two great hoards of Gaggers in 1751 and Irsching in 1859 yielded thousands of these pieces and so established both the area of circulation and the wealth of the Celtic lords of Vindelicia: they were struck in ancient Vindelicia and circulated in what is now Bavaria, in Württemberg, Baden and as far as Hesse. The third basic question, when they were made, remained open; the paper reviews the proposals from Streber through Forrer to Pink and Paulsen and seeks a defensible date.
