Abstract

In the early 1950s Henri Seyrig made known a new coin type of Cleopatra VII: bronzes of Orthosia in northern Phoenicia weighing about seven grams, described by him as showing her draped and diademed bust with a star in the field on the obverse. The reverse shows the Baal of Orthosia with a crescent above his head between two griffin-like winged creatures, with the name of the issuing city below; similar images occur repeatedly on late Hellenistic civic issues of Orthosia. Since the pieces were not illustrated, the paper records them afresh, arranges them by the dates of years two and three, and assesses them as a late portrait of the queen.
