Abstract

This study deals with the coinage of the principality of Leiningen (— Dagsburg — Hartenberg) shortly before its mediatization in 1806. By recently studied sources from archives one can show that coins of Leiningen were struck in great quantities in Saalfeld, departemental mint of Upper Saxony. So far however, there were, based on older publications, only mentioned the mint of Langenargen (Lake of Constance) and Darmstadt (Hesse). The minting of coins of Leiningen has to be seen in connection with the coinage-policy of the principality of SaxonyCoburg, that tried to improve the rotten state of its finances by achieving a profit by means of striking a huge quantity of debased currency
