The Significance of the "Boiotian League/Chalkis" Silver Issue

Abstract

A rare silver stater of the 2nd half of the 6th century B.C. bears a boetian shield decorated with an euboean Chi on the obverse, a wheel on the reverse. This combination of types has widely been understood as expressing a historical meaning. After critical study of all arguments the author concludes thats there is no reason for such an interpretation. This is just a rather short-lived issue of the Tate 6th century B.C., probably struck at Chalkis, which cannot be assigned to any specific league or polis
