Abstract

The paper argues against the view, held by A. H. M. Jones and reinforced by M. H. Crawford, that the changing types of Roman coins were little noticed and often misunderstood by the public. It starts from Cassius Dio's description of the EID MAR coin of Brutus. The author holds Crawford's objection, that neither Dio nor his source ever saw such a piece, to be untenable: the description is accurate, and the mention of Cassius follows from the matter itself and from common usage.
