Abstract

While working through the files of the Bavarian chief mint, the author found the report printed here in its original wording: the royal Bavarian court medallist Joseph Losch on his study visit to Paris in 1809. Of general interest above all is his description of what was then the most modern mint in the world and of its mechanised production, the basic principle of which still partly holds today. Despite Losch's recommendations, collar striking was introduced in Munich only in 1830. Biographical notes precede the text: Losch was born at Amberg in 1770, became court die cutter in 1803 and court medallist in 1808.
