Abstract
An extract from a Munich dissertation on the history of the Alpine Rhine valley in Roman times. In terms of communications the Rhine valley south of Lake Constance is a route from north to south, passable for long stretches, which by way of the side valleys leads up to the passes into Italy, and so a landscape of transit with a mediating role. It belonged to the southern part of the province of Raetia, bordered to the east by Noricum, to the west by Germania Superior and to the south by the transpadane region, and assigned under Diocletian to the Italian diocese. The hoards and coin series of several Roman settlements of this area are presented, from which the author reconstructs the two incursions.
