Abstract

Bavaria owed the turn from absolute princely rule to constitutional monarchy to its first king, Max I Joseph, and a monument was already planned in his lifetime. A letter of Leo von Klenze of 20 June 1820 discusses two sites; the crown prince chose the centre of Max-Joseph-Platz. The municipal decision followed in 1821 and the laying of the foundation stone in 1824, Christian Rauch modelled the colossal statue, cast in 1832 in Stiglmaier's foundry, and the monument was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of the king's death. A history taler was struck for the occasion in 1835 and 1836, and oddly two different pieces exist: the portrait sides by Carl Friedrich Voigt agree, while the literature has not so far examined the differences on the reverses.
