Abstract

Work on the south German rainbow cups, and the attempt to fix this hard to date group in time, made it necessary to examine the theories of Robert Forrer. In his treatment of the great hoard of Tayac in the département of Gironde, Forrer took somewhat more than a sixth of the coins for bowl staters of the Boii and supposed them to have been made in Bavaria or Bohemia; a second group of nearly a sixth is generally assigned to the Bellovaci, and a third Forrer gave to the Rauraci. The paper follows the history and composition of the find and tests whether the hoard really is evidence of the migration of the Cimbri and the Tigurini between 113 and 105 BC.
