Abstract

As early as 1876 Paul Charles Robert held that an ordered classification of the cross type silver coins by period and region was impossible until new and carefully recorded finds appeared, and in 1905 Blanchet wrote that no series was more numerous or harder to arrange geographically. The find of 843 Gallic cross coins at the ancient site of Lattes in the Hérault now supplies fresh evidence. The paper describes the circumstances of discovery, gives a classification and description, and sets the hoard in its numismatic and historical context. Until 1963 Lattes was attested only for the early empire; the excavations from 1964 proved a flourishing town there from the sixth century BC into the imperial period.
