Abstract

That Capricorn was the natal sign of Augustus and was used as such by him is beyond doubt; only the precise astrological connection with his birth is disputed. Capricorn is certainly not the sign of his birth month, which is Libra, and so the month of his conception has long been suspected; an equally old explanation sees in it, through its relation to the moon, the sign of the hour of his birth. The question has not been settled, and the paper does not need it settled. The author inclines to the hour of birth and points to a denarius above whose Capricorn a figure hovers with a billowing veil, which he reads not as Sol but as Aurora and therefore as a sign of early morning.
