Abstract

On a journey to Beirut the author bought from a dealer a small find of Carian silver coins that had evidently been lifted in Turkey, a supposition confirmed when further pieces appeared in the Istanbul bazaar. In both places they were exclusively drachms and hemidrachms of Stratonikeia and Rhodes. Parts of the find entered the international trade; the British Museum was shown 155 pieces of Stratonikeia, of which it acquired some and recorded 51 varieties. In all about 350 coins came to the author's knowledge, some 290 of them from Stratonikeia. Apart from two, all carry a head of Zeus and an eagle in an incuse square; 185 pieces weighed together gave an average of 1.37 g.
