Abstract
Hans-Jörg Kellner's paper on the Celtic silver coins of the Prague type gave this important coinage its first basic treatment and showed clearly in which two areas it occurs, Thuringia and parts of Bohemia, and how it is connected with the oppida there. The author finds his statements on date and origin more open to argument: Kellner, he holds, overlooked the evidence for the origin of the type scattered through the museums of northern Europe. The conventional and unintelligible head of the obverse can be traced back through earlier versions to an ordinary wreathed head of Apollo facing left and does not derive from the helmeted head of Roma on the Roman denarius; what Kellner took for the visor is a conflation of the forelock, nose and cheek of the Apollo head.
