Abstract

For the date at which the late Domitianic earth fort on the Saalburg was levelled, Peter Robert Franke had rested his case above all on one coin from a ditch of that fort which he placed in the years 132 to 134, arriving at 135/137. Heinrich Jacobi had been able to identify only one of seven coins of Hadrian from layers of the earth fort, struck at Rome in 119, and inferred 121/122, which he linked with Hadrian's inspection journey to Upper Germany. Wilhelm Schleiermacher raised justified objections to Franke's chain of argument, chiefly about the circumstances of discovery: Jacobi's statements on the find spot contradict each other, since he names in one place the older cross ditch and in the same publication the titulum.
