Abstract
One of the main grounds for moving the beginning of the Augustan moneyers' coinage back to 23 BC was the assumption that a passage in Horace shows the moneyer Quintus Aelius Lamia to have died as early as 20 BC. In the epistle dated to that year, a Lamia closely befriended with Horace mourns the death of his brother. Because Lucius Aelius Lamia, consul in AD 3, had been fixed from the outset as one of the two, and he lived long afterwards, only a man with a different forename remained for the one who died, and the moneyer alone was available. The author shows that the starting point itself, the identification of the consul of AD 3 with Horace's friend, is impossible on chronological grounds.
