Abstract
Only towards the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century did interest in the barbarian coins of central and eastern Europe grow, and many questions are still far from settled, that of ethnic attribution among them. The term Celtic coins established itself because the circulation area of these types largely coincides with the regions inhabited or crossed by peoples of Celtic origin; closer study then made it possible to define regional groups of differing ethnic origin. Blanchet surveyed types from outside the old Celtic area, among them Macedonian imitations from Transylvania, and had to concede that they form a wholly separate group. Forrer recognised independent issues in Transylvania and Bukovina, and Karl Pink later read the question differently again.
