Abstract

The cohort fort of Abusina near Eining on the Danube counts among the better known forts of the Limes, yet that holds only for the ground plans of its stone buildings, not for those of timber and half timber and least of all for the sequence of layers. In the excavations from 1879 to 1918 the aim was above all to uncover walls and keep them open; three periods with clear traces of burning were recognised, but no one thought of dating them from finds in secure layers. Three coin hoards came to light, none of them kept together. The oldest, discovered in the vicus in 1947/49 and at once dispersed, could be partly reconstructed after long enquiry and is connected with the Alamannic incursion of 233; of a second not a single coin survives.
