Abstract

A well known sestertius of the reign of Tiberius shows on one side an upright winged caduceus, before it two crossed cornucopiae from each of which the laughing head of a boy looks inward, a bulla round each neck; the other side carries the name of Tiberius's son Drusus with the title TR POT II, which dates the coin fairly closely. That these are not symbolic figures is shown by the bullae, which mark the boys as young Romans. The two eldest sons of Germanicus can be excluded, since they were then about seventeen and fifteen years old and already wore the toga virilis. The identical modelling of the two heads points to twins, and so to the twin sons of Drusus.
