Abstract
Georg Wolff's investigations of 1894/95 at Okarben in the Wetterau produced a stone fort of about 5.8 hectares which, by its size, could only have held an ala miliaria; the only other fort of this kind in the Rhine and Main area is Heddernheim, where the Ala I Flavia Gemina left inscriptions, which is why the sister ala was supposed at Okarben and both forts held to be contemporary. Wolff saw in them main forts laid out immediately after Domitian's war against the Chatti. New observations allow other conclusions: the two forts proved identical in construction down to details, and Wolff's findings against that could be refuted, among them his denial of an earth rampart behind the wall. The material behind the wall suggests a pre-Domitianic occupation.
