Abstract

A survey, translated from the French, of the author's own investigations, prefaced by Adrien Blanchet's remark that the great difficulty lies in establishing a chronological framework. Blanchet had recorded that money hardly left the area where it was struck and that hoards are uniform, four fifths of them consisting of local issues. The explanation was the harder the more it was assumed that foreign coins at a site proved direct economic relations with the peoples who struck them; Octave Vauville drew that conclusion for the oppidum of Pommiers. If it were so, one would have to ask why only one hoard in five then contains non-local pieces. From the comparison of circulation and chronology the author sets out the broad lines for Gaul outside the sphere of influence of Massilia.
