Abstract
On 16 November 1693 the cathedral chapter of Bamberg elected the thirty-eight year old canon and president of the court council, Lothar Franz von Schönborn, unanimously as prince-bishop. The five weeks of diplomatic manoeuvring before the election had shown how exposed the prince-bishoprics were and what advantage the secular states enjoyed through a secure succession. Lothar Franz tried with unexampled energy to keep pace with the emerging middling states, and to that end worked beyond his own see: in 1694 he became coadjutor of Mainz and seven months later Elector and Archbishop of Mainz, and so director of the Electoral Rhenish and the Franconian circles. Against this background the paper treats his coinage at Bamberg.
