Abstract
A response to Dirk Steinhilber's monograph on the monetary history of Augsburg, confined to the coins of the Saxon and Salian periods. Surprising is the first, hitherto barely known emission of Bishop Ulrich, whose cross with a pellet in each angle matches the Bavarian denarii of Eberhard, Berthold, Liudolf and Henry I; typologically it confirms an economic alignment of coinage between eastern Swabia and Bavaria which between about 950 and 1005 extended to Bohemia and Poland. Because Ulrich's denarius served as model for an isolated emission of Liudolf which can only have been made before the loss of Swabia, the author dates it to about 950 rather than after 955. The question of the title follows from this: whether the added letters name moneyers.
