For the total number of dies used the mathematical tool has already been worked out; what is missing is an equivalent one for the average number of strikes from one and the same die, since the volume of an emission depends on the product of the two. The factors to be considered are the diameter and thickness of the flan, the nature and fineness of the metal, the relief, the temperature of the flan and the hardness that follows from it at the moment of striking. Microstructural examinations of some fifteen Corinthian staters showed a crystalline structure characteristic of about eight hundred degrees, fixed by sudden cooling in water after the blow. Considerations on the dynamics of the hammer blow follow from this.
