Abstract
In the author's view the use of mathematical and statistical methods can decisively advance or even solve many questions of numismatics. He had opened the discussion fifteen years earlier and most recently treated the subject in a full monograph; here he sets out the main lines in condensed form in order to lead the reader to those monographs. The basic idea: for a series of values for the total number of dies used, given a known average number of strikes per die, it can be calculated how, as the number of coins examined rises, the number of distinct dies observed and the number of die duplicates most probably increase. The corresponding curves are plotted on graph paper and offered as a tool of evaluation.
