Abstract
The paper is more a sketch than a treatise and asks to be read as a series of suggestions. Its starting point is the purchase of Rembrandt's painting Aristotle with a Bust of Homer by the Metropolitan Museum in November 1961. The curator's introduction stated that the bust of Homer and the medal with a profile of Alexander on the golden chain were enough to identify Aristotle. A numismatist looks more closely and is taken aback: the head on the gold coin wears a helmet, and no ancient gold coin of Alexander's time shows the Macedonian king helmeted. Either Rembrandt hung a far later medal on his philosopher, which would be improbable, or he meant a coin of that period and was mistaken.
