Abstract
Thanks to Rudi Thomsen's three volume Early Roman Coinage, the widely branching literature on the Roman coinage of the Punic wars is easy to survey and brought up to the state of knowledge; a period of research is thereby closed and the ground laid for a new one. To build further one must return to the coins themselves, for the early denarius coinage has never been reviewed on a broad basis of material nor illustrated richly enough for the coherence of the stylistic groups to be followed. By style the author means not aesthetic impressions but the assessment of an artist's hand and of workshop tradition, on the model of palaeography. Moreover the denarius chronology was computed on the false premise of a regular annual coinage, which begins only in 49 BC.
