Abstract

The occasion is a newly found Celtic silver coin from the oppidum on the Alteburg near Arnstadt, whose find spot at first sight lies far outside the distribution area of its type; the group is called the Prague type, which already points to Bohemia. The obverse shows a head to the left largely dissolved into pellets and scrolls, in which a few strokes recall the brow guard of a helmet, the reverse a horse springing to the right with a strikingly long tail made up of several strokes. As models the author identifies the imitations of Roman republican denarii with the helmeted head of Roma and a horse, widely produced in eastern central Gaul, which go back to the more richly decorated issues from about 175 BC. The Prague type is therefore to be derived from the west.
