Abstract

In the reign of Philippus Arabs (244/249) the double denarius or antoninianus, as introduced by Caracalla became the predominant standard currency. Occasionally denarii and quinarii were issued for special festive events, sometimes using the dies normally used for striking aurei. The usurper Uranius Antoninus (253/254) in Emesa Syriae not only struck city bronze coinage, but also aurei and tetradrachms. Some pieces presented by dealers show that dies for striking gold coins too were used to strike denarii as a special festive issue. The reason for this, as the author has alredy shown before, the New Year celebration of the city in September/October of A.D. 253
