Abstract

In the lst quarter of the 4th century B. C. not only Athenian coins, but too their alien imitations were fully legal tender in Athens. Probably with the foundation of the Second Athenian League in 378/77 B. C. a bill became law, determining that only coins struck in the Athenian mint were aknowledged as the only official currency in Athens. Imitations out of good silver were tolerated, plated coins and those of inferior value got confiscated. In 375/74 B. C. this law, being too a document of the regained political and economic strength of Athens, became binding in Piraeus. Any violation of this law caused severe punishment to private citizens and undutiful officials. Further the text contains the precise directions on the proceedings in case of lawsuits
