Abstract

This contribution wants to demonstrate that it is not possible to rather recklessly identify the value of bronze coins of Asia Minor by equalling them with the denominations of Roman Imperial bronze units just by their size and weight. The reckoning unit assarion and its partitions or multiples, as used in the Greek East, are very different in weight and diameter. This is caused by the historical development of local money systems, by the fact that these bronzes were credit money and finally by the inflation of the 3d century A. D. Conclusions 165
