Abstract

The paper draws on the archives of the imperial city, above all the Nuremberg city accounts, and thereby corrects an assumption of Herbert J. Erlanger, that each gate token was made in a single copy only. The accounts record two matching pieces for each of more than forty holders. The tokens were handed to the newly elected Obristhauptleute shortly after the election; from about 1730 each carried one, while the second was kept in the Obere Losungsstube.
