Abstract

An unpublished coin in an American private collection attests a hitherto unknown homonoia between Colossae and Aphrodisias. It shows Commodus, and on the reverse two city goddesses clasping hands. The piece was struck in 180 or shortly after, as the still beardless portrait with long sideburns shows. For Colossae, eclipsed in the Hellenistic period by nearby Laodicea, this is the first such relationship on record.
