Abstract

Within an otherwise traditional Byzantine coin iconography, a new motif stands out in the middle and second half of the eleventh century: the emperor as a commander with a sword. The paper assembles the relevant issues of Constantine IX, Isaac I, Michael VII, Nicephorus III and Alexius I Comnenus and places them within the development of the imperial image, which runs from the late Roman profile portrait through the frontal military type to the middle Byzantine bust with stemma and loros.
