Abstract

Philip Grierson appeared to have settled the history of the mancus for good: from the late eighth to the ninth century the Italian successor to the Byzantine gold solidus, at about the same time a gold weight unit in England, in the eleventh century a general term for the gold coins of Islamic Spain and Catalonia, and thereafter gone from use. The paper, however, traces the word in two late medieval Hebrew documents from Germany, where it appears in no dictionary of the language.
