Abstract
The paper takes up once more the much discussed question of the SC on the bronze coinage of Rome, because the explanations on offer contradict one another and none is satisfying in itself. In 1962 Konrad Kraft had shown that the reading current since Mommsen, a separate right of the senate to strike, cannot be upheld, and referred the SC to honorific decrees for Augustus that appear as laurel trees and corona civica on the moneyers' issues; later, he held, it was kept on as a mere relic.
