Abstract

The Saalfeld mint, raised in 1571 to be the fourth principal mint of the Upper Saxon circle and finally closed in 1847, has often been treated. The years after 1680, when duke Johann Ernst received the new principality of Saxe-Saalfeld, are however unusually poor in information about staff and output. Work on sources for the coinage of Saxe-Coburg yielded findings on Saalfeld as well, among them a moneyer's account of 1691, which the paper presents.
