Abstract

The Thessalonican folles of Justin I are scarce and known in three varieties, together with half folles and pieces of 5, 3 and 2 nummi marked as such by a star. With them the Anastasian reform of the copper currency was extended from Constantinople to Thessaloniki. A corpus was assembled from some forty collections in order to study die numbers, die links and metrology: only about 17 or 18 obverse dies served for the folles, with a strikingly high survival rate and an unexpectedly large number of reverse dies to each obverse.
