Abstract

A list of the officials whose names appear on Umayyad, Abbasid and Tulunid glass coin weights and on weight and measure stamps, drawn up to make the attribution of such pieces easier. The author sets out the difficulties: the archaic inscriptions are not always unambiguous, names may be lost through flaking in the soil or through breakage, legends were often carelessly impressed, and it appears to have been the practice to smash the weights deliberately when an office changed hands.
