Abstract
A tribute to the Islamic numismatist Paul Balog on his eightieth birthday, written by Kurt Munzel. Born in Budapest in 1900, Balog studied medicine and moved to Egypt in 1926 because of the economic crisis, directing the laboratories of the Italian Hospital in Cairo until 1961. He left Egypt in 1964 and settled in Rome. The abundant coin material of Egypt and his meeting with Marcel Jungfleisch led him to numismatics; a list of his writings closes the piece.
