Abstract

The second part of the die corpus. When duke Henry II took up independent rule in 967 he changed the ornament in the angles of the cross on his denars from one dot to three, because his name was the same as his predecessors. This may have gone together with a new rate of seigniorage through a lower coin weight: the average weight of the new type is almost a fifth lower, although the reduction may already have set in during the last years of the preceding type.
