Abstract
Money packed in fixed quantities is attested as early as the late Roman republic; the rolls studied here are late antique. The starting point is the hoard recovered in 1895 during building work at Maria im Kapitol in Cologne, an estimated 250,000 coins in four pointed amphorae and a wooden barrel, still recognisable as rolls of fifty oxidised into lumps. The circumstances of its deposit suggest the hoard was hidden in great haste around 333.
