Abstract
Grain could hardly be substituted in the ancient Mediterranean world, and supply crises with steep price rises were frequent. Securing the grain supply was the duty of the cities themselves, supervised by governors and by the curatores rei publicae and their Greek counterparts. This paper, a revised part of a Düsseldorf dissertation, reads the coins of the Cilician cities as evidence for imperial grain deliveries and grain grants to cities of the empire during the Principate, with particular weight on the Severan period.
