Abstract

The last Byzantine gold coins were struck under Manuel II Palaiologos, and the transition to a silver currency is generally placed under John VIII. A closer date for the end of the solidus standard, more than a thousand years old, had so far proved impossible, because the surviving gold coins give no answer. From the reign of John V the silver politikon already served as a substitute at home, its ratio to the nomisma given as three to one by Nikephoros Gregoras. What matters, the author argues, is not private money dealings but the conduct of the state, and he therefore assembles every recorded financial transaction and agreement in the Byzantine imperial charters from 1341 to 1453.
